URC Weekly 6/5/2011: Interfaith Dialogue
Hi Family,
Congratulations to Jalise! Last Saturday, our very own James and Elise officially promised each other to become Jalise (picture fusion for you Dragonball fans). What a joyous occasion this is!
Thank you for those who came out to support the couple. We totally caught Elise by surprise. For food, we had Panda catering, which was cheap and tasty. Before the meal, Sara asked me if I wanted to pray for the meal for everyone. Although I did want to pray, I hesitated.
Sara was correct for having me pray for the meal (thank you Sara). We were at James’ home, a Christian household. We were there to celebrate a Christian couple. Besides, our goal of faith is to make more disciples of Christ, meaning people around us first need to know that we are Christians. But I had to think for a second, since I knew there were some people of different faith were present.
Generally, there are two ways of conversing with those from another faith:
1. Straight-shooting, Bible verse dropping, you better believe in Jesus right now way
2. Let me be careful not to offend you but build relationship with you first way
Frankly, I’m unsure which way is better. Currently, I believe the best way lies somewhere in the middle. We need to be bold at times but we also have to understand that it is relationships with people that change them. As mentioned above, I think praying to bless the couple before the meal was the right decision in this case. I think God will use that prayer to move the nonbelievers there closer to the Truth, even if it is only slightly. Beloved sisters and brothers in Christ, I ask that you spend this week reaching out to those around you who are from different faith. God bless you.

• ALL-COORDINATOR MEETING: 7/10 (Sun) @ 1:30pm, dinner afterwards
• INDIA MISSION: 8/28 (Sun) – 9/10 (Sat); Training Starts in June
• COORDINATOR READING: Please continue to read your devotional books
