URC Weekly 5/8/2011: The Other Sheep
Hi Church,
Our founding pastor, Rev. Chung Kuhn Lee, sent me an email yesterday. He said he ran into an old Union member (let’s call him Kobe) who now lives in Korea. He told me two things about Kobe: One, that he admires me much (who doesn’t?) and two, that he is “the other sheep” Jesus mentions in John 10:16.
I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too, will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd.
I can also tell you two things about this. First, all I remember doing for Kobe is just saying encouraging things to him whenever I saw him at church. Second, many of us have plenty of “the other sheep” in our lives.
Jesus is referring to our friends that are nonbelievers. Church, consider it a great blessing if you have relationships with those who do not know God. Yes, an important point of our gathering is to help each other to mature in faith. Yes, it is important to have great fellowship amongst one another too. But ultimately, our purpose is to become disciples of Christ so that we can train others to also become disciples of Christ.
Think of people in your life that do not know God. Strengthen your relationship with them. Get into their lives. Encourage them, serve them, be patient with them, and love them. Show them what difference God makes in your life. Share the gospel with them in words as well as in action.
If all of us brought in just one of “the other sheep,” our church would double in size. Not to say that being big is everything (I actually think smaller churches are better than mega churches) but we do need to grow. Be patient, for bringing someone to God is likely to be a process. But be consistent in your efforts of loving them. Let’s participate together in the coming reign of God by working on one person in our lives.
