URC Weekly 5/22/2011: Starbucks Episode I

Hi Everyone!

This past Friday, I was at a nearby Starbucks studying and doing church work when an elderly lady approached me. Apparently, she was waiting for a blind date and had the date’s contact information online. I gladly let her use the church laptop, only to quickly decide to type for her; her hands were too shaky due to her old age.

“What website do you need to go to?” I asked.

“Huh?” She replied.

“What website do you need to get the information you need?” I asked again patiently.

“Oh, it’s lesbian personals online dot com,” she answered.

“What?” I reacted in disbelief.

“Lesbian personals online dot com,” she repeated.

I could hear the two girls studying in the next table giggling as I typed in the web address. Slightly embarrassed, I just hoped that this wouldn’t lead into a porn site.

Jumping to the end of the conversation, I found her the contact information she needed and even made a phone call for her to ensure that these two ladies would meet. No, it didn’t turn out to be a pornographic website. Yes, I did contribute to a homosexual relationship possibly being edified, which I firmly believe to be displeasing to God.

I did it because I wanted to share the gospel with the lady. But I just could not get myself to do it. I became too self-conscious to talk to a lesbian lady about Jesus Christ in a crowded coffee shop. I had many chances to bring up God. She was in a position to listen; she thought I was so nice that she even offered to buy me lunch while she waited for her date!
I recognize that I missed a good chance to save a soul. Next time I run into a lesbian lady, she’s going to hear about Jesus for sure.

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ, sharing the gospel is a must, especially with the socially marginalized. Every occasion talking to your friends or someone random can be an opportunity – an opportunity to save a soul eternally. Let’s recognize that and be ready to share our faith in Christ with those around us. It’s ok if you don’t do it every time. What matters is the genuineness of your desire, which leads to action.

Remember, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead (James 2:17). I pray that all of us will display our faith in Jesus through our action of sharing the gospel.
