URC Weekly 5/15/2011: World of Color

Hello Church!

I went to Disneyland (California Adventure to be exact) this past Saturday. The main event of that night was World of Color. Frankly, it blew me away. It so much more than what I had expected! I never knew that water can be used as a movie screen. What a concept!

The combination of mesmerizing laser lights, classic Disney movie music, and everyone’s favorite cartoon characters displayed on exotic water screens were just spectacular to say the least. I really felt like people were gripped in their hearts with passionate reminders of why they love Disney so much. If someone wasn’t a Disney fan, she certainly was one after the show.

Except for me, that is. Don’t get me wrong, I was thoroughly impressed with the extraordinary creativity that flowed continuously for thirty minutes. However, I still wasn’t a Disney fan. So I thought about why. Then, I realized that I am a FOB!

That must be it. I don’t have a sentimental tie to all those cute Disney characters since I didn’t grow up with them. Sure, I’m more of a stay-at-home kind of person to begin with, but I’m certain that no one likes to walk all day shoulder-to-shoulder around a packed theme park. It’s just that many people are willing to go through it because of the emotional connection they have built with Disney after being physically and emotionally invested to its products for years.

In a way, our faith in God is like this. It’s not a one-time deal but a continuous relationship (2 Tim 4:7). How do you have a relationship with God? Well, just like how you have relationship with Disney (or a real person). You communicate with it, invest time and effort into it, and adjust life according to it!

God has given us the Bible, which is the written message of God to us. God also moves our hearts toward certain directions when we pray. God gives us visions, voices, dreams, feelings and logic. We respond back by obeying in action. This is how we communicate with God.

We put in time and effort into God because reading the Bible, praying and living by what God commands takes time and effort. If you are reading this and feel unsure of whether you are living in a way that God wants or not then you need to put in more time and effort into knowing God. Read, pray and obey.

As we read, pray and obey, we will find ourselves right in the middle of God’s will – not just knowing it, but living it out. Not only our particular deeds, but also our entire lives can become aligned with what God wants.

Beloved men and women of God, the key is consistency. I pray that we all become more consistent at reading, praying and obeying.
