URC Weekly 4/17/2011: The Sixth Man of the Year



Hello Family,

On Tuesday of this week, Lamar Odom became the first Laker ever to win the Sixth Man of the Year Award. This award is given to the best player amongst those who played more games as a reserve than as a starter.

Odom averaged 14.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3 assists per game, while making 53 percent of field goals (any shooting attempts except free throws). He received 96 of 117 first place votes, winning the award in a landslide. Odom has played in the United States national team last summer and is widely considered to be good enough to start in any NBA team.

Yet understanding that his team would benefit the most from him coming off the bench, Odom embraced the role with humility. Odom could have demanded a starting position, disrupting team chemistry and strategic scheme. He could have demanded a trade, getting a more glorious starter role somewhere else (as many others have done). Church, the kingdom of God is similar to this. We are called to think of what is the best for the community and serve each other accordingly.

Jesus says, “…whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave – just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many (Matt 20:26-28).” Beloved men and women of God, let’s make our church into a realized part of the kingdom of God. Let’s start serving one another. Let’s look for ways to make our community better, and let’s take the initiative.
