URC Weekly 1/30/2011: A Fine Christian Lady
Hi Family,
This past Saturday I watched The Blindside, a film based on the life of Michael Oher, a professional football player for the Baltimore Ravens. Although the movie doesn’t follow every detail of his life perfectly, most events of Oher’s life are portrayed accurately.
Michael was born between a crack addict mother Denise and a father who was frequently in and out of jail. He was placed in foster care at the age of seven, and alternated between living in various foster homes and homelessness. Fortunately, with the help of an acquaintance, Michael was enrolled in a Christian school, where he met Leigh Anne (played by Sandra Bullock) and Sean Tuohy.
Leigh Anne and Sean take Michael into their home and eventually adopt him, providing for his every need. Consequently, Michael receives a football scholarship to the University of Mississippi; The Baltimore Ravens take him 23rd in the 1st round of 2009 NFL draft. Pretty crazy, right?
In the movie, Leigh Anne, wanting to know more about Michael’s past, finds Denise. Realizing how much Leigh Anne cares for Michael and how serious her commitment is to him, Denise tells Leigh Anne, “You’re a fine Christian lady!”
It is my prayer that we become a community of fine Christian ladies (and gentlemen). As it was preached this past Sunday, all men will know that we are disciples of Jesus if we love one another. Let’s remember that God’s love is shown in relationships, and we have the power to make it happen. Let’s keep loving one another as Jesus loves us so that those around us can look at each one of us and shout, “Wow! You’re a fine Christian lady!”
