Hello Family,
I’m sure all of us know the meaning of the idiom “Say it, don’t spray it.” Unfortunately, I heard this from Hannah on Monday as I was describing the parts of the movie she missed. Thank God, for she was really gracious about my bodily lack of control of emotional excitement; my apologies go out to you as well if I had ever sprayed some words at you instead of saying them.
The movie that we watched is called “The King’s Speech.” It tells the story of Albert the Duke of York, the second son of King George V of England, who eventually becomes a king himself. The catch is that Albert is a stammer. Played by Colin Firth, “Bertie” struggles throughout the movie from his serious speech impediment and the enormous pressure of having to give public speeches as a member of the royal family.
While Bertie is portrayed as the one who is more fitting to be the next king than his brother, Albert is just not able to express himself properly, for he lacks the ability to speak normally. As I watched Bertie stop frustratingly between every two to three words, distort his face awkwardly in attempts to enunciate properly, and engage in all kinds of supposedly therapeutic methods – tongue twisters, singing songs, yelling phrases, dancing waltz, and even smoking cigarettes – I became so thankful for the ability to speak.
The ability to speak. Yes, one of God’s gifts to us that we take for granted so frequently. While I’m certainly not writing this to make you feel guilty (remember, God loves John AND Judas equally) I am asking you to use your ability to speak more precisely, when it comes to loving your brothers and sisters as Jesus has loved you. Your heart may burst with deep and passionate love for our URC Family, but what good is that if you don’t express it?
So family, I encourage you to start saying it. Don’t be shy, we are all family here. I know that some of us are not too close to each other yet, but saying kind words in person or finding out about someone’s day over the phone will take care of just that. If you love your brothers and sisters here at Union, then say it! Tell it like how it is! But please, don’t spray it.
