URC Weekly 10/31/10: Fall Backward

Hi Family,

In college, our friend made the fatal mistake of leaving for class with her dorm room door unlocked.  Of course, we went in and changed all her clocks to an hour forward, so she went to her next class an hour early, all alone.  When the inevitable angry reaction came, we pointed out it’s much better to be an hour early than an hour late.  It didn’t help much, but it’s still true for us…

1) FALL BACKWARD: THIS SATURDAY NIGHT.  When you go to sleep, turn your clocks back an hour, sleep more, and come early and “bursting with fruit flavor” when you arrive at our sanctuary.

2) MISSION SCHOOL: THIS THURSDAY AND SATURDAY.  To serve our KM congregation and allow them to learn about missions, we’re providing child care.  Hyonroh and Garnet will take the kiddos on Thursday from 7 – 10 PM.  On Saturday, Hana Kim and Christine Park will look after them from 10 AM – 1 PM (Pastor Hong asked that you be there by 9:50 AM), and then Jason and Christine Park are on from 1 PM – 6 PM.  $10/hour and meals will be provided (I’m not sure about Thursday night, but I emailed Pastor Hong…).  THANK YOU!!!

3) COMMUNITY GROUP: THIS FRIDAY @ 7 PM @ HYONROH’S HOUSE (1725 E. Cortez St., West Covina, 91791).  Last time was a phenomenal meal, so let’s cook again!

HYUNJOO, we have leftover drinks from last time, so you don’t have to bring ‘em.

4) DONATE T-SHIRTS/BLANKETS/SOCKS: THIS SUNDAY.  Please bring gently used items to Garnet this Sunday to help meet basic needs for homeless people in Santa Ana.

5) COORDINATORS’ MEETING: THIS SUNDAY @ 1 PM.  This is a crucial meeting, so please be sure to attend.  Come prepared to evaluate your ministry this year and make suggestions for next year.

6) BAPTISM: If you’re interested in being baptized (or having your child baptized) this holiday season, please let me know THIS WEEK.  After this baptism, the next opportunity will be during the Easter 2011 season with Reverend Moon.

7) CHURCH CLEANING: POSTPONED TO 11/13!  I may have to provide pastoral counseling to the Couch Guys because they’ll be so disappointed about waiting another week (John Yi just read this and shed a single tear).

8 ) SAVE THE DATES: V-BALL WITH UMEC on Sunday, 11/14; THANKSGIVING DINNER WITH KM YOUNG ADULTS on Saturday, 11/20 (we’ll cook and serve our brothers and sisters who are in need of much encouragement).

9) SCRIPTURE READING/OFFERING: Michelle Won

10) DEVOTIONS: Daniel 1-6.  We remember the stories: the lion’s den, the fiery furnace… The Israelites were captives in Babylon, under King Nebuchadnezzar.  This book of history and prophecy details incredible accounts of Daniel and his friends’ integrity (Daniel’s name=”God is my judge”), upholds the sacredness of worship of the one true God, and has prophetic content about the end times, all the while emphasizing the sovereignty of the Mighty One.  From chapter 3 and the fiery furnace:

13 Furious with rage, Nebuchadnezzar summoned Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So these men were brought before the king, 14 and Nebuchadnezzar said to them, “Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, that you do not serve my gods or worship the image of gold I have set up? 15 Now when you hear the sound of the horn, flute, zither, lyre, harp, pipe and all kinds of music, if you are ready to fall down and worship the image I made, very good. But if you do not worship it, you will be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. Then what god will be able to rescue you from my hand?”

16 Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego replied to him, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. 17 If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us[c] from Your Majesty’s hand. 18 But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.”

May the Lord give you eyes of faith, so you can conquer all that you face this week and in this season.
