URC Weekly 9/26/10: U-N-I-Volleyball-N

Hi Team,

Last Sunday night, we had the church choir celebration for Union’s 30th anniversary.  It’s usually a pretty long event and hard to sit through (For me, too!  That’s why, instead of urging y’all to come, I just braced the staff for a URC turnout of two: one photographer and one videographer…), but for some reason, I really loved this one.  Maybe it’s because I was taking pictures and moving around a lot, maybe it was the quality and variety of the music.  I think, above those reasons, I suddenly had the realization that I’m in that phase where every event at Union will be my last, and it’s given me a profound appreciation for every person and activity we have in our blessed church.  Praise God for 30 years of our mother church, which has produced an EM filled with you guys.  Another last for me coming this Saturday is the V-Ball tournament…

1) VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: THIS SATURDAY @ 8 AM @ WHITTIER NARROWS NATURE CENTER (1000 Durfee Ave., South El Monte, 91733 (just off the 60, west of the 605)).  The park is pretty big, and it looks like we might be in a different section from last year.  I’ll post a comment at the bottom of this page by tomorrow night, after the staff sends more specific directions.

We have our strongest team in years, but very little practice.  Still, I think we can go deep and regain legitimacy, to the point where people will see our T-shirt logo and think of it as a brand rather than a lazy church that won’t come up with a new design for the third straight year, trying to throw everyone off by changing up the colors.  From the KM side, Rev. Moon has asked for the whole church to come out, so it should be a full-on event.

TEAM MEMBERS: Andy, Won, Sang, Jessica, Eunice, Charlene, Smith, Jacob, Rev. Ahn, Commander, Deacon Park.  WE WILL MEET AT 7:00 AM tournament day to eat and practice, so be there on time (last year, the lack of practice killed us)!!!

RESPONSIBILITIES: I’ll buy McDonald’s and bring the giant cooler; WON will buy ice that morning (CHANGE TO THREE 20-lb. bags); JACOB/SMITH/ANDY will bring volleyballs and buy drinks (@ Costco: 25 small bottles of Gatorade/Powerade, 75 cans of soda, three 2-packs of Arrowhead water (2.5 gallons each), 70 bottles of 16.9-oz. Kirkland water bottles)

2) TNF: THIS THURSDAY @ 7 PM @ ROUNDTABLE PIZZA (on Azusa, just South of Colima in the same mall as Guppy House).  Grace’s favorite place as a kid, and they have video games.  ‘Nuff said.

3) MISSIONARY GATHERING: THIS SUNDAY @ 4 PM @ CHURCH.  Anyone who has been on a Union mission in the last three years (since we started Hualapai), there will be a gathering to pray, share about our experiences, and plan for the future.  If you’ve been to Mexico, Mongolia, or Hualapai missions with our church, please join us.  There will be dinner provided afterward.  COORDINATORS’ DINNER will not be on Sunday as a result…

4) SCRIPTURE READING/OFFERING: Joel Kim

5) DEVOTIONS: Ezekiel 19-24, a hard six chapters to read, but a sobering reality of the holiness of our God that we cannot take for granted.  From chapter 24:

13 ” ‘Now your impurity is lewdness. Because I tried to cleanse you but you would not be cleansed from your impurity, you will not be clean again until my wrath against you has subsided.

14 ” ‘I the LORD have spoken. The time has come for me to act. I will not hold back; I will not have pity, nor will I relent. You will be judged according to your conduct and your actions, declares the Sovereign LORD.’ ”

Let’s meet the Lord every day this week in quality time, find strength and focus, and live in victory.

V-BALL TOURNAMENT LOCATION UPDATE: It’s at the same part of the park as last year, and the following address should be more accurate: 750 Santa Anita Ave., El Monte, 91733. Look for the part that’s just south of the 60, from Santa Anita Ave. go into the western part of the park, and the field should be just northeast of Legg Lake (you can see it on Google Maps if you enter the address)
