URC Weekly 9/19/10: 1980

Hi Everyone,

(Sorry about the banner quality on the homepage; it was the best photo compilation.)  1980 marked the beginning of the greatest cultural decade in American history.  (Say, “Check” after each one of these, from the photo above, because you can’t deny they’re MONEY) Movies: Ferries Bueller, Say Anything; Entertainment: Pac Man, Nintendo, Rubik’s Cube; Sports: Pro wrestling (forget football!); Technology: The computer; Music: G ‘n R (not Duran Duran); Christianity: THE FOUNDING OF UNION EVANGELICAL CHURCH!!!  Yes, Union is as monumental as Hulk Hogan, Axl Rose, and Super Mario, and this Sunday, we celebrate God’s faithfulness to our church for the 30th year…

1) 30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION: THIS SUNDAY FROM 7-9 PM @ KM SANCTUARY.  This is an event for every ministry, not just the KM, and I hope you consider attending.  Many of our URC parents will be performing for this epic musical event, and this is their masterpiece every year.

NEEDS: @ 3:00 PM, we need a bunch of people to help set up the sanctuary; @ 7:00 PM, we need one photographer and one videographer (I’m happy to be one of those, but we still need one more person); From 7:00-9:00 PM, there will be a lot of kids, and we’ll combine with Youth Group in taking care of them.

OTHER INFO: DRESS CODE is no shorts or slippers, and DINNER will be provided @ 5:30/6:00 PM (IF YOU PLAN ON GOING TO DINNER, LET ME KNOW BY FRIDAY because food will be ordered according to how many people).

2) CG: THIS FRIDAY @ 7 PM @ SAMLENE’S (on Rosecrans @ Beach, La Mirada).  Potluck feast, Sam’s Bible study on witnessing to Hindus or Buddhists, and fellowship…

3) VBALL PRACTICE: THIS SUNDAY @ 1:30 PM @ KM SANCTUARY LAWN.  We need to practice, and it’ll just be our church this week, working on drills and getting our defense/offense in sync.  Yes, in the middle of it, we’ll help set up the sanctuary for the 30th anniversary, then back to practice (consider it our weight-training/conditioning).

4) VBALL TOURNAMENT: A WEEK FROM SATURDAY (10/2) @ 8 AM @ WHITTIER NARROWS NATURE CENTER (1000 Durfee Ave., South El Monte, 91733 (just off 60, west of the 605)).  Won and I agreed that this is our best team in years, and we’re looking to go deep into the playoffs.  From the KM side, Rev. Moon has asked for the whole church to come out, so it should be a full-on event.

TEAM MEMBERS: Andy, Won, Sang, Jessica, Eunice, Charlene, Smith, Jacob, Rev. Ahn, Commander, Deacon Park.  We will meet at 7:00 AM tournament day to eat and practice, so be there on time!!!

RESPONSIBILITIES: I’ll buy McDonald’s and bring the giant cooler; WON will buy ice that morning (five 20-lb. bags; I switched our jobs); SMITH/JACOB/ANDY, can you guys buy drinks (a grip of water/soda/Gatorade, I’ll let you know how much stuff on Sunday)?  SAM, please bring camera.

SCRIPTURE READING/OFFERING: Jane Lim

DEVOTIONS: Ezekiel 13-18.  What an amazing six chapters!!!  Summary in chapter 18:

21 “But if a wicked man turns away from all the sins he has committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, he will surely live; he will not die. 22 None of the offenses he has committed will be remembered against him. Because of the righteous things he has done, he will live. 23 Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live?

24 “But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die.

30 “Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live!

Praying for y’all, as always.  Even Joon-Soo, in each mealtime prayer, prays about the food, our family, and our church… see you Friday!
